What Actually Happens To Your Body During A Fast, Hour By Hour

At the beginning of each week I fast for 16 hours to give my digestive system a break. And every few months I practice 14 hour fasting intervals over a few days as a spring clean but I do include liquids.

I am currently reading a very interesting book on the benefits of fasting for healing and the concept of autophagy as healing is my area of interest.

However even though I have been practicing this for years and feeling the benefits, I wanted to understand what actually happens, step by step as one fasts .I found this article by Alexis Sheilds ND which explains it quite simply.

0 to 4 hours
The first four hours after you eat are known as the anabolic growth phase. Your body is using up the energy you just ate to power your current activity and for cellular and tissue growth.

Your pancreas produces the hormone insulin. This allows your body to use up the glucose that was released into your bloodstream after your meal and to store any excess energy in your cells for later use.

4 to 16 hours
The second phase kicks off after four hours and lasts up until about 16 hours from your last meal. This is the “catabolic,” or breakdown, phase, when all those extra nutrients start being released from storage to be used for energy.

Once the energy stored in your cells runs out, your body starts to rely instead on stored fat. The process of releasing fat and burning it up for energy releases chemicals known as ketone bodies for energy, which usually happens around the 16-hour mark.

The rate at which you reach this stage really depends on what you ate for the last couple of meals before your fast. If you ate a lot of carbs and starch, it will take a bit longer than if you ate mostly fats and protein.

One of the most powerful features of fasting, called autophagy, also kicks off during this phase.

Autophagy is triggered by a reduction in a growth regulator called MTOR, and this process is basically a spring cleaning for your cells. It gets rid of any dead or damaged cellular material, which can otherwise contribute to aging, cancer, and chronic disease.

16 to 24 hours
Once you pass the 16-hour mark, glucose in the cells and glycogen in the liver and muscles begin to dwindle rapidly, which causes you to burn stored fat in order to keep up with your body’s need for energy.

Your energy demands at this stage likely haven’t changed much—you’re still waking up, working, walking, interacting with people, maybe exercising—so the amount of energy that’s needed can be quite significant.

The production of another chemical, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), is also triggered at this point. This really increases the amount of autophagy happening all around your body.

24 to 72 hours
Again, it’s important to work with a physician if you plan to do a prolonged fast.

Once you pass 24 hours of fasting, your body will enter into a state called ketosis, where you’re reliant on burning your fat stores for energy. As fat cells are broken down for energy, ketone bodies are created and released into the bloodstream.

Ketone bodies act as fuel for the brain when glucose is scarce. Glucose is our brain’s primary source of fuel, but ketone bodies provide the brain with additional benefits.

Burning ketones can lead to a major uptick in your cognitive performance, mental clarity, and general sense of energy and well-being as you enter into a multiday fast.

Your brain also gets a boost around the 24-hour mark from an increase in production of brain-derived nootropic factor (BDNF).

BDNF supports the growth of brain neurons. Not only is it correlated with improvements in long-term memory, coordination, and learning, but it’s also thought to be key in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in later life.

72+ hours
Once you’ve been fasting for three days or more, your body enters a deep state of ketosis. All the previous benefits: Autophagy, the uptick in the production of beneficial chemicals and hormones, fat loss, and mental clarity continue to increase. That said, your thyroid hormones also start to get affected, as your body thinks it’s starving.

Research suggests longer fasts can help your body become more resilient to stress and exposure to toxins and that certain hormones produced at this stage can have beneficial anti-cancer and anti-aging effects. That said, people with a history of eating disorders should avoid prolonged fasts, and it’s always a good idea to seek medical supervision when fasting.

Dr. Naiman, ‘Diet Doctor’ suggests that “the sweet spot for intermittent fasting” occurs between 18 and 24 hours of fasting since this is the time period that sees the greatest drop in insulin and increase in lipolysis — the breakdown of fat.

Give intermittent fasting a try and please let me know what you experience.

*If you have medical conditions please consult with your doctor before you attempt a fast.

Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z, and Gen A and the health issues they face

Featured

Understanding each generation is particularly important to businesses and financial institutions wanting to capitalise on their spending habits. Here is a link from a financial company explaining quite well the different generations.

I am more interested on the impact on each generations wellness as that is my area of expertise. There is very little research pertaining to the health and wellness of each generation and what I could find various depending on the sources.

This information is purely based on what I have observed as a trend in my practice so I share as some food for thought:

Age 57-75: Over 80% of Boomers are taking between 2 and 5 chronic medications and have bought into a belief system that their bodies are failing them and medication or operations are needed in order to survive. They are less likely to try alternative health options. Most have had at least two organs removed. Providing for their old age is a priority concern. Hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, cholesterol, arthritis and insomnia are highest health issues here.

Age 41-56: Generation X’s are stuck taking care of parents and children so tend to suffer from burn out or chronic fatigue and are not tuned into their own needs so many identify with auto immune diseases especially involving thyroid and adrenals. Anxiety, depression, chronic inflammation and metabolic syndrome can also be an issue. Over half are on at least one chronic medication for depression, sleep or thyroid.

Age 25-40: Generation Y’s are disillusioned with the current health industry and instinctively feel that a more natural approach to their wellness makes more sense for them. They question the status quo and are more in tune with their gut feelings but are not always sure where to turn for assistance. They tend to be more health conscious but their generation is also influenced by experimentation with drugs so they can fluctuate between extreme health and apps to measure everything.. and addiction binges. They may have been subjected to many antibiotics and drugs for ADHD as children so also have compromised immune systems. Health issues include anxiety, mood, asthma, sinus and allergies. Fertility issues are also on the increase with this generation.

Age 9-24: Generation Z are growing up in a hyper connected world and have very short attention spans. They are more self propelled, aspiring to own their own businesses and following their purpose but often do not know what this is. They are more fluid in thoughts and beliefs and if their parents and environment does not try and understand this they can be more anxious and stressed and suffer with mental health issues. Physical fitness, healthy eating and mental health are more important to a much larger percent of these individuals and they use technology to help them manage this. They understand intuitively that they are energy beings. Fear and general exposure to toxins is an issue so many suffer with asthma, sinus, post nasal drip, sensitivities. Depending on the supporting environment, they could tend to compare themselves to everyone around them and come up lacking so self worth is an issue needing to be addressed.

I would love to hear what your views are on the various generations and their health issues so please share.

Be more like a tree

I wish I knew this when I was younger. Boy, things would have been easier!

How do you feel when your friends or family use you as a sounding board and barely take a breath to stop and ask you how you are doing?

Or when ‘friends’ freeload at your home by the sea under the guise of wanting to spend time with you lol.

Or those clients that drain you for free council and advise in social settings instead of honoring your worth and booking a consult.

Or the parent that seems to criticise every choice you make, veiled in the coat of love.

Or that friend you do so much for who just never appreciates you.

Or when your youngster comes home crying because school friends behave horridly towards them.

We all have many different scenario’s that make us feel less than or that rob us of joy.

But it does not have to be that way.

We have the power to choose how we behave and feel about any given situation. No matter how another behaves, or treats you, or appreciates you, or not…YOU have the choice to allow their behaviour to affect you and define you.

If you know who you are, know your worth, and your self worth is not defined by the appreciation, acceptance or validation from another, then you will not get angry, disappointed, heartbroken by their choices and behaviour. You will not allow external factors to dictate your happiness and worth. You will not get sick from pent up hurt, frustration and anger.

I have found it to be so. The more I make it an intent to have no vested interest in a specific outcome, no expectation on another, I can just allow them to be them and the situation to be what it is, without it affecting me. And I can be me.

And the more you are grounded in who you are, the healthier your personal boundaries will be.

More tree quotes

You don’t have to give every time. It’s okay for you to take some time for yourself, as well. In fact, if you want to have enough to give to others, you will need to take care of yourself first. A tree that refuses water and sunlight for itself can’t bear fruit for others. – Emily Maroutian

“A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that in order to aspire we need to be grounded and that no matter how high we go it is from our roots that we draw sustenance.” – Wangari Maathai

“Storms make trees take deeper roots.” – Dolly Parton

“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.” – Bruce Lee.

“Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop.” – Rumi

And lastly this beautiful bit of advice from a tree…

Dear Friend,
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter
Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!

Trending – Complementary health therapies

Trend watchers all over the world have predicted for many years now that more and more people are looking to complementary and integrative health modalities for their health. This will be even more so in 2022.

People are becoming more conscious of the reality that we are vibrational, frequency, energy beings.
Complementary health therapies address the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional energy imbalance within us when we experience dis-ease symptoms.

Specialised Kinesiology
Specialised Kinesiology is a complementary health therapy based on eastern and western teachings, which essentially makes use of muscle testing to assist a person in getting to the bottom of their energy imbalances, in order to get back to homeostasis and optimal health.
Kinesiologists use muscle feedback as a stress monitor to identify imbalances in their client’s structural, chemical, mental and emotional energy systems. By correcting these imbalances the kinesiologist is able to re-activate the body’s built-in healing ability as well as identify external factors affecting the client’s well-being.

Kinesiology does NOT diagnose, prescribe or treat in any way, medical conditions or named diseases; nor does it attempt to keep people away from doctors, drugs, surgery, or the skills of any heal professional when they need them. Kinesiologists do not treat diseases or ‘conditions’. The best form of treatment for a client is integrating complementary treatment with their traditional, medical treatment programme.
Kinesiologists believe that when you are experiencing discomfort, it’s merely your body trying to ‘talk to you’. Instead of suppressing symptoms (messages), an alternative approach is to try kinesiology to establish what the cause of the issue is.
Specialised Kinesiology has shown to be really beneficial for:
• Headaches
• Emotional problems
• Depression
• Stress
• Learning difficulties, ADD, ADHD
• Pain – Neck pain, back pain, muscle pain, joint pain
• Insomnia
• Low blood sugar
• Sinusitis
• Food allergies and sensitivities
• Recurrent infections
• Fatigue, chronic tiredness, lacking energy
• Relationship difficulties
• Low self esteem
• Phobias
• Addictions
• Skin problems
• Digestive disorders, chronic constipation, stomach pain, colitis
• Menstrual problems

Tap in to tune in to what’s causing stress and imbalance in your life. Your body is the messenger and holds the answers.

Guard your thoughts…

Guard your thoughts because everything you do flows from them.

Our emotions are created from our neurotransmitters which are mainly in our gut. Therefore, what you eat, the state of your gut health will have an impact on your emotions, which create thoughts. The everyday stressors you perceive in your life also will affect your emotions and thoughts. So, will your core beliefs.

And so, your thoughts and emotions are not always originating from your true higher self. You are always connected to source (God, Gaia, Muhammed, whatever name you choose). Even when you forget this.

Practices of stillness, meditation, conscious focussed breathing, gratitude/appreciation exercises like daily journaling of all your blessings, prayer, walks in the forest or on the beach (nature) will be opportunities for you to connect to Source. From this place you can trust the feelings and thoughts that come.

Use your emotions to feel your way back to Wellbeing.

Esther Hicks.

We are all vibrational, energy beings. Whatever you give your attention to causes a vibration. Then by law of attraction that will come to you.

This may seem like a strange concept to you, but I know this to be true. You get what you think about whether you like or not. When you are worrying you are planning when you are dreaming you are planning. Try it.

May you be Happy, may you be Healthy, may you be Well

Ozone Therapy: A clinical review

Ozone therapy as a treatment for lower back pain

Treatment with ozone/oxygen‐pneumoperitoneum results in complete remission of rabbit squamous cell carcinomas

Receive 8 treatments in one, in 30 minutes, for just R430

ozone1The Hocatt (Hyperthermic Ozone and Carbonic Acid Transdermal Technology) acts as an ozone steam sauna, in which patients sit with just their head exposed, while their body receives the benefits of an infusion of ozone, carbon dioxide, steam, aromatherapy oils, Photon light, Far Infrared and electromagnetic therapy (rife).
The steam sauna heats up to a comfortable temperature and then carbon dioxide gas (carbonic acid) is infused into the sauna. After this, the sauna is infused with ozone gas. The heat and the carbon dioxide serve to open the circulation to the skin so that when the ozone gas is infused it is absorbed by the skin into the general circulation.
As steam gently fills the sauna, the Photon and FIR light penetrates the skin to help increase blood flow and circulation. Photon breaks any painful inflammatory cycle by dilating small blood and lymphatic vessels. This increase in circulation can result in accelerated healing and pain relief together with the Rife treatment which is administered at the same time.
Throughout the treatment, the patient’s head is outside the ozone steam cabinet and they are given an additional boost by inhaling pure oxygen throughout the 30-minute session.

The health benefits of having a session in the Hocatt ozone steam sauna are extensive. It increases circulation, promotes energy, naturally stimulates anti-oxidant enzyme production, improves absorption of nutrients, improves skin tone, detoxifies, kills pathogens and helps relieve many chronic health problems.

Ozone steam sauna benefits overview:
• Increases blood circulation
• Increases blood oxygen level and metabolism (anti-aging)
• Increases core body temperature
• Combats and disposes of pathogens and toxins (detox)
• Relaxes muscle tension
• Increases energy levels
• Increases Serotonin levels (relaxing)
• Burns up to 600 calories per session
• Activates skin tissue
• Enhances sports performance

Specialised Kinesiology
Kinesiology is the science of assessing the energetic systems of a person for balanced function, by using the change of physiological response through the muscular system as feedback. Using this same feedback, Kinesiology identifies any non-invasive treatment strategy to primarily affect and balance the energetic systems of a person for the purpose of promoting, restoring and maintaining health.

NLS Diagnostic Therapy

The application of nonlinear diagnostics is a true breakthrough in the field of diagnostic medicine, allowing for the correct determination of the cause of the disease, and consequently, select and prescribed effective treatment.

We can test the condition of biological and fine energy bodies, detect bio-photon waves of biological homeostasis, brain waves, detect quantum energy vibration levels of 874 cells and the frequency spectrum of any drug.

Iridology and Sclerodology

Irisdiagnosis is a natural non-invasive diagnostic method that used the Iris (colour part of the eye), Sclere (white of the eye) and Pupil (dark middle of the eye) to help a trained Iridologist to accurately assess the health status of a person’s body.

An Iridology assessment provides the trained Iridologist with information about the root cause of ailments, strengths and weaknesses of all organ systems and tissues within the body, as well as inherited genetic disease patterns.

A great advantage of Iridology is that it provides information about the status of vital processes in the body. By vital processes we mean both disease causing (e.g. poor waste clearance) and health maintaining processes (e.g. blood circulation). It allows the practitioner to detect signs of biochemical and physiological function and dysfunction in the body before symptoms of disease appear, therefore it is great as a health maintenance method.

Electrotherapy (Rife)
Arthritis, influenza, bronchitis, tonsillitis, shingles, candidiasis, fibrositis, chronic fatigue syndrome, glandular fever, cellulitis, sports injuries and many other acute and chronic diseases. Not only are viruses and other pathogens destroyed, but also damaged tissues are detoxified and regenerated. Rife is also very effective for inflammation and pain.

Ozone therapy
Removes fat, eliminates cellulite, restores skin elasticity and combats stretch marks, slows down effects of aging by stimulating collagen fibers, stimulates oxygen metabolism, alkalises and detoxes the body. Beneficial for various diseases including muscle-skeletal disorders, coronary vascular insufficiency, migraine, hypertension, skin disorders, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, stress, inflammation, wound treatment, allergies, sleep disorders and injuries.

Cryo therapy
Weight loss, breaks down fat and cellulite, restores skin elasticity, lymph drainage, pain relief, improved blood circulation. Carries fewer risks, much less invasive, no scarring and a lot cheaper than liposuction. Plus you could see up to 2cm loss per session.
Combined with the cryotherapy we offer cavitation, lipo laser and radio frequency treatments which break down fats, firm and tone skin and minimise stretch marks.

If you are visiting Knysna these coming holidays, do pop in and try some of these treatments.

Ozone for sportsmen and women

runnerOzone oxygenates the tissues, while also increasing the production of ATP. This shortens recovery times from sports injuries and high intensity exercise and increases energy levels. It also assists with sore muscles and slows anaerobic fermentation which combats the building up of lactic acid in muscles.
Studies have shown that ozone therapy can help increase an athlete’s endurance, the capacity to build muscle, and even increases brain function. It also increases blood flow to the heart, which reduces the amount of strain your body takes during a workout.
One of the conducted studies showed that male runners who engaged on an average of 12- to 30- minute sessions twice a week (immediately after intense running sessions) experienced a 32% increase in the distance they could run before reaching the point of exhaustion. Another case study showed that a group of athletes who underwent frequent sessions in between training increased their physical fitness by 53.7%, as opposed to the 11.55% of the group who did not.
Benefits of ozone treatment for sportsmen and women:
• Increased tissue oxygenation
• Higher levels of ATP, resulting in more energy and faster recovery
• reduced lactic acid build-up
• Prevention of sore muscles
• Reduced swelling, bruising and pain, and faster healing
• Could increase performance
